Snaky fingers tugged at her belt and probed her boot tops. Breathing deep, she tolerated everything, remembering death screams in the dark and Raschad pinned against her.

Don’t lose your breakfast. Don’t be an idiot and faint. Standing so still, it was a real danger. She flexed her knees and concentrated on breathing and counting mossy heads.

She’d never seen so many mistwalkers, never even heard of so many in any one spot - more now even than that night…

Poison-tipped fingers slipped away. The tugging and sniffing ended, and the mistwalkers began to disappear back into the green. At the sight, her chest lightened a bit. But gray-green bodies still crowded the trail, and two big males lingered. One edged between Nuke and Haze and lay a hand on each man’s shoulder.

Real fear took her gut at that, and nearly took her senses, too, as she saw the growing crush about her sleds, the creatures still examining Raschad.

Please! She remembered bodies on the trail. Please!

Aireils shifted, and Sal glimpsed the newbie between their gangly bodies. He’d been netted tight earlier. Now he stood barefaced, staring, his eyes desperate, his hair dripping sweat.

What had she brought him into?

Nuke’s grip tightened on her arm. Shaking, she closed her eyes, worked at holding still and not getting herself or these men killed. “Bank - “

Her eyes flipped open as Raschad’s yelp chopped off.

She glimpsed his panic-stricken face. Aireils were lifting him off his feet. Thier shaggy hands dropped from the overstory, snagged his arms, and hauled his rigid body straight out of sight - up and up into the soaring green.

She couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. Gigi’s breath…

She half lunged. Nuke’s grip near broke her arm. The Aireils ignored her, faded away into sun and mist.
